Quenton Dowdell NZCS MNZMS Managing Director
Quenton commenced his working career in 1970 as a Bacteriological Technician in the Freezing Industry. During his six years in this industry he gained experience in the areas of Industrial Microbiology, Water Technology, Food Technology and Trouble Shooting within his sphere of operation. He left for Australia in 1977 where he took up a position of Technical Officer at Sydney University within the Agronomy and Horticultural Sciences Department. Following his return in 1978 he joined T.J. Sprott & Associates Ltd, an Analytical Consulting Laboratory based in Parnell. This company was renowned for it's technical work in defending Arthur Alan Thomas in the ‘Crew Murders'. In 1985 the basis of this company was purchased by W. Grayson & Associates Ltd where under the control of Quenton the Microbiological Section grew very rapidly particularly from areas such as the Dairy Industry. At this time Quenton became a director and also established the Asbestos Testing Laboratory within it's Auckland branch. Following the sale of Grayson's to Amdel in 1995, Quenton accepted the opportunity to purchase the Asbestos and Health & Safety Sections of Grayson Laboratories and thus set up the current company Dowdell & Associates Ltd.
Quenton has over the years been actively involved as a Technical Assessor for Both IANZ and NATA in the areas of Asbestos Analytical, Microbiology and Applied Physics (Temperature Calibration).
Ian Murgatroyd BSc Deputy Lab Manager
Ian commenced his laboratory career in 1989 when he joined W Grayson & Associates as a Technician in the Microbiology Department. Ian's work ethics and skills were such that he was quickly transferred to the newly created Asbestos Laboratory where he gained his experience in asbestos analysis and consulting. Once the new company Dowdell & Associates Ltd was established Ian became a key figure in the day to day operations with all manner of operations, both analytical and consulting. Asbestos still plays a large part in Ian's normal activities with particular to Analytical and Building Survey work. In more recent years Ian's work and studies have led him into the fields of Occupational and Environmental Monitoring with a specific emphasis on Indoor Air Quality. Ian is currently a Technical Assessor for both IANZ and NATA.
Robert (Bob) Mumford NZCS Dip SM,
MMgt ( OSH ) Occupational Hygienist
Bob has worked in industrial laboratories covering oil refining, water supply, and thermal electricity generation since 1963. Most roles included a plant technology component. He joined Grayson Laboratories in 1992 following the closure of Marsden Power Station where he had been station chemist for 14 years. He brought to his new role academic and professional qualifications in chemistry, corrosion technology and safety management. Bob is currently a Technical Assessor in Occupational hygiene which has also been the focus of his recent postgraduate study which he plans to complete in 2003. Other interests include boating and tramping. Bob has been involved with the volunteer ambulance service since 1971. He is married with two adult sons.
Rob Nicholson Consultant
Rob (Nick) joined the then company W Grayson & Associates Ltd in 1991 where he was initially involved in the building and maintenance side of the operation. The background knowledge gained during this time enabled him to follow a pathway into the Asbestos Laboratory where the analysis of building materials formed a significant part of the business in that Department. Nick attended a very comprehensive Asbestos Monitoring course in Sydney with Pickford Consulting and as such gained IANZ accreditation for Airborne Fibre Counting. Following a break of 3 years Nick rejoined the new company Dowdell & Associates Ltd in 2000.
A sbest os plays a large part in Nick's day to day activities which include; Sample Identification, Asbestos Removal inspections, Air Monitoring and Building Surveys. Nick is currently IANZ accredited for both Asbestos Identification and Fibre Counting.
